Distribution of zooplankton populations in marennes-oleron bay (france), structure and grazing impact of copepod communities ArchiMer
Sautour, B; Castel, Jerome.
Zooplankton distribution in Marennes-Oleron Bay (France) varies during the year and is essentially determined by seasonal rhythms. The whole set of zooplanktonic taxa can be divided into three groups: the first bearing oceanic affinities; the second with estuarine tendencies; and the third more intermediate. Important water flows inhibit the establishment in a specific zone of an autochthonous community (this community is reduced to such species as Acartia discaudata, Acartia grani and Euterpina acutifrons). Zooplanktonic populations reach their maximum abundances at the end of spring and during summer, particularly during spring tide in the inner neritic zone. The estimation of die grazing pressure of copepods (which are the dominant taxa) is variable...

Diversity and stability of an estuarine trophic network ArchiMer
Lobry, Jeremy; David, V; Pasquaud, S; Lepage, M; Sautour, B; Rochard, E.
Estuarine areas provide highly valuable ecosystem benefits for human populations, despite being under intense demographic, economic and ecological pressures. Hence, an understanding of the structure and function of estuarine ecosystems is essential for understanding the persistence and stability of these ecosystems and their response to perturbations. This study synthesises available data and knowledge about the Gironde estuary (SW France) in a mass-balanced trophic model to illustrate potential key patterns in the functioning of the estuarine ecosystem and key elements of its stability. In order to evaluate the total direct and indirect impact on the whole community of the 2 main sources of anthropogenic perturbations in the estuarine area, mortalities...

Initiation of winter phytoplankton blooms within the Gironde plume waters in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Labry, Claire; Herbland, Alain; Delmas, Daniel; Laborde, P; Lazure, Pascal; Froidefond, J; Jegou, Anne-marie; Sautour, B.
Thermostratification and seasonal Light increase are generally considered the first causes of phytoplankton spring blooms in temperate waters. The objective of this study is to confirm the existence of winter phytoplankton blooms, responsible for the early exhaustion of phosphate, within the Gironde plume waters (southeast Bay of Biscay), and to understand what may initiate them so early. Two cruises, BIOMET 2 and BIOMET 3, were carried out respectively in early (8 to 21 January) and late winter 1998 (25 February to 11 March). An increase of phytoplankton biomass (chl a) between the 2 cruises and non-conservative nutrients observed in late winter confirm an early phytoplankton growth both in the Gironde plume and adjacent oceanic waters. Among factors that...

Needle in a haystack: involvement of the copepod Paracartia grani, in the life-cycle of the oyster pathogen Marteilia refringens ArchiMer
Audemard, Corinne; Le Roux, Frédérique; Barnaud, Antoine; Collins, Catherine; Sautour, B; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; De Montaudouin, X; Coustau, C; Combes, C; Berthe, Franck.
Marteilia refringens is a major pathogen of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis Linnaeus. Since its description, the lifecycle of this protozoan parasite has eluded discovery. Attempts to infect oysters experimentally have been unsuccessful and led to the hypothesis of a complex life-cycle involving several hosts. Knowledge of this life-cycle is of central importance in order to manage oyster disease. However, the exploration of M. refringens life-cycle has been previously limited by the detection tools available and the tremendous number of species to be screened in enzootic areas. In this study, these two restrictions were circumvented by the use of both molecular detection tools and a mesocosm with low biodiversity. Screening of the entire fauna of...

Phytoplankton spring bloom of the Gironde plume waters in the Bay of Biscay: early phosphorus limitation and food-web consequences ArchiMer
Herbland, Alain; Delmas, Daniel; Laborde, P; Sautour, B; Artigas, F.
During the spring 1995 (2-25 May), a cruise was carried on the RV Poseidon (Germany) on the continental shelf of the south Bay of Biscay. The objective was a comprehensive study of the planktonic food web within the Gironde plume waters. In these waters phosphate was present at very low concentrations (undetectable to < 0.1 mu mol.L-1), whereas nitrate, silicate and ammonium concentrations were much higher (several mu mol.L-1 for nitrate and silicate and 0.5 to 1.0 mu mol.L-1 for ammonium). The size distribution of the phytoplankton biomass (estimated from chlorophyll a measurements by high performance liquid chromatography) and primary production (measured by C-14 in situ method) showed a great proportion of small (40 to 70 % < 3 mu m) and active...

Typology of environmental conditions at the onset of winter phytoplankton blooms in a shallow macrotidal coastal ecosystem, Arcachon Bay (France) ArchiMer
Gle, C; Del Amo, Y; Bec, B; Sautour, B; Froidefond, J; Gohin, Francis; Maurer, Daniele; Plus, Martin; Laborde, P; Chardy, P.
Phytoplankton dynamics were assessed in the macrotidal ecosystem of Arcachon Bay through high-frequency surveys over a 5-year period in order to characterize typology of environmental conditions at the onset of the productive period. Temporal variations of hydrological and biological parameters were examined in external and internal waters of the lagoon, during the winter-spring periods from 1999 to 2003. An additional survey was performed during winter-spring 2005 in order to study the vertical structure of the water column. The occurrence of winter phytoplankton blooms between January and March emerged as a recurrent event. The early onset of the productive period is influenced by the biological functioning of adjacent Bay of Biscay oceanic waters. It is...
